One of the top restaurants in Cannes

Le Cirque owners Mathieu Yanikian and Stephan Durand wanted to create a restaurant that felt like a home. Somewhere where it would be hard to leave. Smart thinking I thought. Their initial design concept was New York loft apartment meets Parisian Bistro. After a few meetings with Mathieu and Stephan, I knew that this place would be special. These lifelong friends with big hearts made a dynamic duo. Full of ideas – we were all excited to get working on their new venture. Together creating, what I felt sure would become, one of the top restaurants in Cannes.

One essential (and practical) factor we had to determine before anything else, was how many customers did they hope to seat. Whenever I design a restaurant, it’s vital to start with the layout of the tables. Customers need to have enough space to eat and relax. And waiters need adequate space to glide between tables and serve easily.

Stephan, in charge of the kitchen, sources fresh seasonal organic produce to create modern Provencal and Asian inspired dishes. Mathieu out front, provides a warm welcome with his infectious smile and attentive service.

This led us to address the next vital step in the structural design process. We needed to split the space over two levels to ensure the maximum amount of tables. Creating this upstairs level also worked perfectly from a design perspective. Reinforcing a modern loft-home aesthetic.

Wooden floors were laid and brickwork on walls left exposed. This former beauty salon was quickly transforming into a new modern space. To connect the floors, a metal staircase was installed which added the perfect amount of drama. Moroccan lamps, (added later) provided elegant ambient lighting.

With Marrakesh in mind, the Majorelle blue, chosen by the owners, boldly dominates the colour scheme at Le Cirque. This distinctive blue transformed the large shelving unit situated next to the kitchen. It has now become a truly striking feature of the restaurant.

Furnishings were sourced from our suppliers but also from antique markets. I wanted to find special one-off pieces like you would for your own home. And I love the hunt!

Comfortable antique armchairs were upholstered in blue velvet to add a touch of luxury. They contrasted beautifully with the vintage pink roses, which decorate the tables. Kitchen style cabinets nestle away in corners and mismatched plates hand painted and designed by Beayto hang on the walls. Floor lamps hang over tables – inspired by lazy living-room lounging. Perfect for late lunches and a good bottle of wine!

Upstairs, a breakfast bar style dining area for those wanting a quick bite and are happy to share a bench. This relaxed informal seating proves very sociable for their customers. Happy chatting away to strangers.

Le Cirque was built six years ago in 2012 and it has blossomed into the highly successful gourmet bistro I knew it would be. Buzzing day and night with locals and those in the know. A happy discovery for lucky tourists who pass by. Their fresh organic produce is sourced locally to create modern Provencal and Asian inspired dishes.
During the Lion and Cannes film festival, it plays host to many events. And has become a go-to destination for food in Cannes. My go-to place too! (shh… don’t tell too many people)
