From as far back as I can remember, textures have always fascinated me. Bark from trees, surprisingly soft to the touch. Straw from stables, scratching yet comforting at the same time. I remember as a child lying down in a field of flowers and grass, warm from the sun, joyfully sliding my fingers up and down. And finely ground sand from a soft white beach – fingers like an hourglass as the sand slips away.

I have so many childhood memories, often rooted in nature. And this is where my passion for texture was born. I find when choosing textures in the home, we can often subconsciously connect to certain textures more than others. It’s a very personal thing. Evoking memory and feeling. I know this is how it is for me.

Texture is currently ‘having a moment’ in the world of interiors. Whilst texture is nothing new when it comes to interior design. The reinvention of texture brings exciting ideas for the home. And don’t tell anyone, but it’s the next big home décor trend for 2019.

So…here are my top tips to update your home using texture! – enjoy!

6 Ways to Update Your Home using Texture

1. Mix it Up

First of all, matching curtains, cushions and rugs went firmly out of style along with Potpourri back in the ’80s. For a modern approach to texture in a living room – mix different colourways and textures in similar colour-tones. This stylish mix of greys and blues from Black edition’s new fabric collection compliments this simple modern setting.

2. Hang wallpaper like Art

Who said walls were just for pictures? Textured wallpaper is the biggest headline for the texture trend. So much so, I had to include two ideas in my guide. Hanging textiles on the wall like art started to gain in popularity last year but my texture update for 2019 is all about textured wallpaper. I love the ethnic style of Pierre Frey’s wallpaper designs (shown above). Perfect for panelled walls or a feature wall. Warning: Stroking may occur.

3. Add to what you have

Be inspired by what you already have. Choose patterns and textures which unite your décor. Mark Alexanders’ current collection does exactly that with this striking textured stripe fabric (above). It unifies all the natural elements together in this peaceful balcony setting. Roll on the summer!

4. Give your armchair a make-over

We all have an armchair that could do with a make-over. This is the easiest way to update your home using texture. My advice is this. Treat it in the same way you would invest in a classic designer coat. Choose high-quality fabrics which will stand the test of time. Any of these beautiful fabrics (above) from Designers Guild’s new collection would simply transform that old armchair.

5. Add Impact with textured Wallpaper

We are not hanging textured wallpaper like art here. Surround your walls in neutral tones of textured wallpaper to provide the perfect backdrop to a room. These stunning wallpapers from Black Editions (above, left) and Pierre Frey (right) create a similar aesthetic to Venetian plastering and Le Corbusier’s iconic style (wood texture on concrete). But without the mess!

6. Choose curtains with bold designs

Finally, for my last home update, we focus on the modern curtain. Texture has long been an old friend of this home staple – but for 2019, it gets a fresh reinvention. My tip here is to be bold with colour, pattern and above all, texture. The wooden table and chair (shown above) compliment the statement curtain design from Black Editions beautifully.
