Outdoor living on the French Riviera

Summertime and the living is easy…sings Ella Fitzgerald, so soulfully in her 60’s classic hit. During the hot summer months, (unless you are on holiday), most of us can find the living… not so easy. We try to stay cool, (happy in our air-conditioned cars) but really, we just need to change where we are living in our homes. Spend more time outside the home. Whether your outside space is a garden, terrace, patio, rooftop, or balcony. Embracing outdoor living is a wonderful way to enjoy your home on warm days and humid nights. Breathe in fresh air and let’s take our summer living outside the home. Here’s our take on outdoor living on the French Riviera.

Living Outside

When it comes to designing an outside area, approach it like an extension of your existing home. A modern concept, shown here above. Bring out your chairs, tables and cushions. Who said they are meant for indoors only? Here, my client was fortunate enough to have a large outside space with a roof and BBQ area to entertain. The absence of windows allows for welcome cool breezes and nature’s scents and sounds. Sunbathing on a sofa? Yes, please!

Take inspiration from surrounding nature

The design for this charming Provencal? courtyard was drawn directly from the nature that surrounds it. The curl in the base of the table and stone water feature design can be seen mirrored in the tree behind it. The addition of a water feature (taking centre stage here) is the perfect partner to this courtyard. Helping to create a sense of calm and relaxation. I’m sure our clients have enjoyed many peaceful days and wonderful evenings dining outside here.

This beautifully tiled plunge pool takes ‘adding a water feature’ to the next level. It looks so inviting, right? – The design of these day beds are a perfect example of how to live more outside. Perhaps, even sleeping here too!

A different perspective – Roof-top Living

There is nothing like taking in the big blue, (sky and sea), high up on a rooftop. When you stare out from your higher perspective, you can feel transported to a different place.

To make the most out of outside living, rooftop style – there are three important factors to consider.

• Invest in high-quality furniture (which always comes with covers). And make sure it’s happy to be outside 12 months of the year. (You don’t want to have to move in the winter months)

• Comfort. Think of your rooftop area as your summer living room. Luxury seating and loungers are essential to draw you back into the open. Cushions take be taken from your home and added for comfort.

• Less is More. Don’t clutter your outside area with non-essentials. One table for all is enough and keep it tidy. You don’t want to trip up on the rooftop!

A Garden Haven

Luxury homes in warmer climates are often built with a roofed outside terrace areas leading out into the garden. During the summer, these dark cool spaces are a welcome retreat from the heat. And the perfect place to relax, eat and sleep. Shown above, are some examples of garden terraces we designed for our clients. In order to create these tranquil havens, we like to use high quality, simple and natural materials. Along with beautifully crafted wooden garden furniture, the colour palette is also kept simple. Letting nature do the talking.

Balcony Style

Living more outside the home can be a simple as taking a few small steps onto your balcony. Changing your view, (also in a literal sense) can sometimes jolt a certain mindset. Recharge your thinking. We all strive to be more mindful and changing things up is a good thing. Be more creative when your outside space is on the smaller side. But keep luxury living at the forefront.

A room with a view! (even for the smallest of spaces…)

Who says your outside space needs to be big? – It’s the same view when you sit down in your chair and look around in wonder. We love this small balcony we created for a client (which leads off their bedroom). Just remember to invest in your chairs and table. If you choose wisely (or ask us to help you choose) – they can last you a lifetime. Now…the only other two essentials for this balcony would be a sunset and of course a cold glass of champagne!. Perfect.
Cheers to you, and living outdoors this summer, wherever that might be!

Till next time,
