Looking for vintage lighting inspiration?

Last month, I explored the quirky British town of Brighton for my guide to vintage interior design inspiration. For this second Brighton instalment, I focus on vintage lighting and lamps. By looking at vintage lighting, we can see how original design helps inspire our new modern interiors. I hope you will find my guide useful, and it spurs you on to hit the flea markets yourself!

Digs

First of all, we head back into Brighton’s north laines. A wonderful cluster of unique and independent shops. If neon lights and unexpected interior delights are your thing, then make sure you track down interior shop ‘Digs’ (I’m pictured outside the shop above). Here, I found some classic industrial table lamps (above, left) which would be a great addition to any desk or table.

Top Tip – Neon signs

Interested in adding some theatrical drama to your home? – this neon ‘Cloakroom’ sign is the perfect way to light up a dark corridor. Hang a neon sign like this above your coat hooks. A useful light and decoration. I love it!

Vine Street Vintage

A stone’s throw from Digs (and also featured in last months’ blog) is the simply divine ‘Vine Street Vintage’. These beautiful 60’s lampshades (above, right) are in immaculate condition and hang in their store like works of art. Numerous homeware stores have copied this famous orange cased glass design to produce a version of their own. The classic white glass interior on the original lamp casts a warm ambient glow.

Top Tip – buying vintage homeware

Injecting a few classics into the home like a vintage lamp or an Eames chair will add authenticity to your home décor. However, make sure you don’t take it too far, or your home will end up looking like a vintage homeware shop. A few carefully chosen pieces are all you need.

Next, whilst wandering around the north laine antiques & flea market, I came across another 60’s classic orange lampshade (on right). Although much smaller in design, and not quite as desirable as the previous larger one. The lovely brown and cream cowhide rug, (seen under chair) was a good find and works well in this 70’s retro setting. More desk lamps, (left pic) – this time from the 50’s and 60’s. In particular, I love the chrome 60’s fan style lamp. A perfect partner to the walnut side table.

Whilst continuing my vintage lighting hunt, I spotted this wonderful 60’s cream Scandi-style lighting suspension. Yet another original design which has been copied many times over the years. Simple to re-create as the design is made up from folded strips of plastic. Hidden away in a dusty back room in the same shop, I also found this 70’s tiled ceramic lamp base (on right). A bit too heavy for my suitcase, I think…

Top Tip – Upcycling

Source something original and then upcycle it for a new lease of life. Paired with a neutral modern lampshade, this lamp base would be a great addition to any living room or hallway.

Finally, two very different lamps which caught my eye. On the left, we have a design from the late 60’s. Ideally positioned over a dining table, it would cast a wonderful circle of light above. On the right is 50’s industrial metal green pendant lamp. You often see inspiration pins from Pinterest full of these old-style lamps. Often favoured hanging in kitchens or above breakfast bars – they suit a modern stripped-back interior setting. The continuing trend for industrial interiors is still going strong. This lamp or even better, three of these (over a breakfast bar) would be a great in a kitchen with chrome fittings and concrete floors. Very contemporary.

Top Tip – Modernise your lighting

To modernise a vintage lamp like this, source long bright contrasting electrical cord to hang it with. But make sure you always use a qualified electrician for the fitting.
